Shadows.
Shadow, the other side of the coin that I call Light. Both elements, shadow and light, visible but not tangible are representatives of energy. The ephemeral shadow-shape observed by both the human and camera eye is not tangible, in a way therefore does not exist in real time. In a way therefore are less important than the object or the Light on the object that creates the shadow.
It is however, exactly this 'less-important' - so to speak - 'non-existence' of a shadow that tickles me. It - the shadow-shape - creates space for imagination. The shadow evokes in stead of describes the existence of a real tangible presence/object of something in real space. Isn't this what happens when one contemplates a work of art? (Even though music lovers praise the superiority of music over visual art, because of it's ephemeral character. But that's another argument 🙂
This shadow-shape, born from light touching a tactile object, change the shape of the object. And we know, that changing, or developing a shape, is also know as metamorphosis. More importantly, this resultant newly created shape, adds another dynamic to the original tangible object. Why? Because the newly distorted shape challenges the brain and a sense of mystery is experienced in the viewer.
Maybe I'm rambling, but, enter a shadow my imagination focusses on the metaphorical or symbolical meanings of Light and Dark as they have been observed in ancient philosophies as well as modern man's more 'scientific' interrogation of the human mind by psychology: Light is described as representing conscious thought and Dark stands for the sub-conscious aspects of the mind. Remember the late 19th century early 20th century theories psychologists Freud and Jung. Ancient religions created the idea of a Sun-god and the Shadow of darkness representing evil. I am intrigued by the Dark side as trigger for imagination and fantasy.
